Crisis Line

Privacy Policy

Crisis Line is a single-player fiction game published by Steven Bunting (“we”, “us”). This policy explains exactly what the app does with information. It is short because the app does very little.

Crisis Line is a game, not a crisis service

The characters you speak to are fictional and generated by an AI language model. Nothing you type reaches an emergency service, a counsellor, or any other human responder.

If you or someone else is in real danger or distress, contact your local emergency number. In the United States, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline answers 24 hours a day.

What stays on your device

The app stores three things locally. None of it is transmitted to us.

WhatWhereWhy
Your difficulty settingApp storageRemembers your preference
Highest case unlockedApp storageSaves your progress
A device key identifieriOS KeychainIdentifies this install to our server (see below)

Deleting the app removes all three. You can clear your progress at any time from the app's Settings screen without deleting anything else.

The private key behind that identifier is generated by, and never leaves, the Secure Enclave hardware on your iPhone. Neither we nor Apple can extract it, and it is not linked to your Apple Account, your name, or your email address.

What leaves your device

Crisis Line contacts exactly one server, operated by us, and no other network service.

What you type during a negotiation. To generate a character's reply, the app sends the text of the current conversation, together with the fictional scenario for that case, to our server. Our server forwards it to OpenRouter, which routes it to the AI model that writes the reply. We do not attach your name, email, Apple Account, or advertising identifier to any of this, because the app never asks for them and does not have them.

Please do not type real personal information into the game. Everything you write is processed by a third-party AI provider. Treat the input box as public: no real names, addresses, phone numbers, medical details, or anything you would not want leaving your phone.

Proof that the app is genuine. Each request carries a signature produced by Apple's App Attest service, along with the device key identifier described above. This proves the request comes from an unmodified copy of Crisis Line on a genuine iPhone, which is what stops strangers from using our AI budget. This data identifies an installation, not a person. Reinstalling the app produces a brand-new identifier with no link to the previous one.

Ordinary network information. Like any web server, ours receives your IP address and the time of each request as an unavoidable part of how the internet works, and records it in standard server logs.

We use the device identifier and request timestamps for one purpose only: enforcing rate limits and daily usage caps, so that a single install cannot run up an unlimited bill.

Who else processes your data

RecipientWhat they receiveWhy
OpenRouter, Inc.Conversation textRoutes it to the AI model that generates replies
The AI model provider OpenRouter routes toConversation textGenerates the reply
Apple Inc.Attestation dataVerifies the app and device are genuine

OpenRouter and the underlying model provider handle conversation text under their own privacy policies and retention practices, which we do not control. We have no other processors, and we use no advertising or analytics partners.

How long we keep things

Conversations are not stored as part of your game history on our server; each turn is processed and returned. Device registrations (the public key and its counter) and usage counters persist for as long as the install is active so that quotas work. Standard server logs, including IP addresses, are retained on a short rolling basis for security and troubleshooting, and are not used for any other purpose.

Children

Crisis Line depicts hostage negotiation, violence, and psychological distress. It is not directed at children, and it is age-rated accordingly on the App Store. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Your choices and rights

Because the app holds no account and no identity, there is nothing for us to look up about you by name. In practice:

If you are in a jurisdiction granting rights of access, correction, deletion, or objection (such as the UK GDPR, EU GDPR, or CCPA), you can exercise them by contacting us at the address below. Be aware that we may be unable to identify which data is yours, since we deliberately hold nothing that ties an install to a person.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes materially, we will update the effective date above and publish the revised version at the same address before the change takes effect.
